The first page of my comic done all in brush with no pencil layout--actually came out pretty well! I think this is one of my most successful uses of gray ink wash so far--lots of dark gray areas for lighting and mood but it doesn't come off as washed-out or muddled.
I did have to repaint the dude's head a bunch of times--he's a new character and I was still working out the look. This last face came along after I'd realized I couldn't do anything with the mass of non-waterproof white ink and black ink layers I'd built up, so I scraped them off and started over--but there was still some residue left, and it somehow contributed to this kind of subtle underpainting of gray tones in his face. I wish I could reproduce *that* trick at will. : D I still can't quite figure out who he looks like, but I know it's *someone.*
